Tintilia del Molise RARE GRAPE red

Tintilia is a black-skinned grape grown in very small quantities in Molise, southern Italy. Its exact origins are unknown, although its name is thought to be derived from the Spanish word "tintilla," referring to the stain left on tablecloths by its deep red juice.

Tintilia vines produce medium-sized, egg-shaped berries in loose-winged bunches. During maturation, some berries will even detach themselves, thinning bunches even more and further lowering the vine's yield. Tintilia wines tend to a rich, ruby red in color and are full-bodied, with evident, yet soft, tannins. They are mostly high in alcohol, which is usually balanced by their highly aromatic and juicy nature. Typical flavors include prunes, plums, sour cherries, licorice and black pepper.

Tintilia was once the most widely planted variety in the Molise region. Because of it is notoriously low yields, however, it was largely abandoned after World War II as producers looked for more high-yielding and profitable alternatives.

The variety gained new momentum in the 1990s thanks to some careful producers and to the introduction of the regional Molise DOC in 1998. This was compounded in 2011, when the variety was granted its very own Tintilia del Molise DOC title.
