History: Tazzelenghe is an ancient red grape variety native to Friuli Venezia Giulia, particularly in the province of Udine and the hills of the Colli Orientali del Friuli. Its name derives from the Friulian "tace-lenghe”, meaning "tongue cutter," a clear reference to the extraordinary tannic power and acidity that characterize the historic wines produced from this variety. The first reliable documentation dates back to the 19th century, when the grape was already widespread in mixed vineyards and intended for the production of austere, long- aging wines. In the 20th century, its presence drastically declined, but in recent decades Tazzelenghe has been reevaluated as part of the recovery of native Friulian grape varieties. Tazzelenghe is grown almost exclusively in Friuli Venezia Giulia, especially in the hilly areas of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, in the municipalities of the province of Udine near Cividale del Friuli, Prepotto and Povoletto where it represents one of the traditional components of the local winemaking heritage. In winemaking, Tazzelenghe produces musts rich in tannins, with high acidity and structure. It requires long or very controlled macerations, depending on the desired style, to obtain mature and integrated tannins. Aging in wood, especially in large barrels, is almost always essential to soften the grape's phenolic harshness. Officially registered in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties since 1977, Tazzelenghe is used for red wines with great longevity and, in some cases, in blends to impart depth, color and structure. Tasting notes: The wine from Tazzelenghe has a very intense ruby color, with purple hues in young wines. On the nose, it expresses aromas of black fruits (blackberry , plum , currant ), spices, balsamic notes and sometimes earthy or ferrous hints. On the palate, it is structured with sustained acidity, very vigorous tannins and a long, persistent finish. The evolution in the bottle leads to complex aromas of leather, tobacco, dark chocolate and sweet spices, with tannins that gradually integrate. (Courtesy of: https://www.quattrocalici.it/)
