This white variety comes from the Douro valley and is widespread and almost exclusively distributed there; it was first mentioned in 1711. The name is an abbreviation of "rabo de gato", cat's tail, as a description for the elongated grapes. Synonyms are Rabo de Asno (donkey tail) or Rabo de Carneiro (mutton tail). The wine has an expressive acidity, freshness and minerality; it is lively despite plenty of alcohol, with aromas of lemon and orange blossom. Rabigato is considered a variety with high quality and storage potential.
