Plavac Veli is a dark-skinned grape variety native to and grown exclusively in Croatia. The vines have large, juicy berries with relatively thin skins which make for light red wines with little in the way of tannins. Plavac Veli is also quite low in acidity, and its wines are thus best suited to early consumption, as they lack the structure to age. The name Plavac is given to a number of varieties in Croatia, such as Plavac Mali, however, the two varieties are unrelated.
