History: Not to be confused with Picolit Rosso del Friuli or Refosco Gentile this name, which means
‘tiny black’, probably derives from the small size of the berries.
Piculit Neri, a niche grape variety , present in very small areas and almost always intended for highquality
artisanal production, is grown only in the area around Castelnovo del Friuli and Pinzano al
Tagliamento, in the western section of the province of Pordenone.
Piculit Neri vines are most clearly identifiable in the springtime, during budding; a cotton -like down
covers the buds*. It is sensitive to humidity and requires constant ventilation, characteristics guaranteed by the hillside exposure. It shows moderate resistance to the main vine diseases , but still requires careful management of the canopy and crop loads. Ripening is medium-late , and the yield per hectare remains naturally low. Emilio Bulfon rediscovered the varietal – a few vines in Costabeorchia, a tiny village in the alpine
foothills overlooking the Tagliamento river valley in the early 1970’s – and brought it back from the brink of extinction.* *- (Courtesy of Wine Searcher)
While the first bottling/vintage was in 1989/90, it has been officially registered in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties since 1992.

Tasting notes: On the nose, it offers aromas of red fruits and berries ,
particularly cherry , blackberry , and blackcurrant , with notes of spice , violet, and light balsamic
nuances. On the palate, it is structured, with fine yet present tannins, lively acidity and a long,
elegant finish. It is a wine with a refined profile, capable of interesting evolution over time, developing
notes of leather, tobacco and ripe fruit. (Courtesy of https://www.quattrocalici.it/vitigni )
Food pairings: Its high acidity and moderate tannins make it ideal for pairing with rich, savory, and
gamey dishes, such as rabbit stew, pork, seasoned cheeses, charcuterie, grilled meats, and tomato based pasta.
