RARE GRAPE VARIETAL RESOURCE

Not to be confused with Picolit Rosso del Friuli or Refosco Gentile this name, which means ‘tiny black’, probably derives from the small size of the berries. Piculit Neri is grown only in the area around Castelnovo del Friuli and Pinzano al Tagliamento, in the western section of the province of Pordenone. Piculit Neri vines are most clearly identifiable in the springtime, during budding; a cotton -like down covers the buds.* Emilio Bulfon rediscovered the varietal – a few vines in Costabeorchia, a tiny village in the alpine foothills overlooking the Tagliamento river valley in the early 1970’s – and brought it back from the brink of extinction.* *- Courtesy of Wine Searcher The first bottling/vintage was in 1989/90.
