Nocera is an ancient grape, likely originating in northeastern Sicily, with historical ties to Calabria. It is famously reputed to have been the primary component of Mamertino, a celebrated wine of antiquity favored by Julius Caesar. Nocera is characterized by large, blue-black berries and is noted for its vigor and general resistance to disease, though it can be prone to berry shatter.
Officially registered in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties since 1970, the Nocera grape variety is ampelographically very similar to the Nerelli (Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese) which have been present in the Messina area since ancient times. Very widespread at one time, today, in the vineyards of the Messina province, one can find very ancient vines, trained as bushes, with short pruning to achieve low yields and good aromatic concentration. Nowadays it has been reduced to just a few hectares, supplanted not only by the Etna vines Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio, but also by other national and international varietals.
Scattered Nocera plants may also be found in vineyards in the provinces of Catania, Syracuse and Ragusa and included in the DOC Faro and DOC Mamertino di Milazzo denominations both as a blend and, more rarely, as a single varietal. Small vineyards can also be found in some inland micro zones of northeastern Sicily. Altogether, vineyard area remains very limited but is expanding thanks to growing interest in its oenological qualities.
From an oenological perspective, Nocera stands out for its intense ruby red color (tending towards garnet as they age), crisp acidity, and a lively yet elegant tannic structure. The musts are rich in polyphenols and intense primary aromas. Blended, it adds color, vivacity, and longevity, but as a single varietal, it can express a refined, territorial personality, especially when aged in steel or large barrels, so as not to overwhelm the aromatic component.

Tasting notes: On the nose, it offers pronounced aromas of ripe red fruit (cherry, black cherry, blackcurrant), floral notes (violet, dried rose), sweet spices (licorice, nutmeg) and balsamic or mineral hints, which bring to mind the volcanic nature of the soil.
On the palate it is structured but not heavy, with lively acidity, firm but integrated tannins, and good persistence. The profile is harmonious and dynamic, with a strong gastronomic vocation.
Food pairings: It pairs flawlessly with rich traditional Sicilian dishes, such as stewed meats, grilled tuna, caponata, mature cheeses and legumes, hearty, savory foods like braised lamb shanks, Pasta alla Norma (eggplant and salted ricotta) and deep-dish pizza.
Because of its natural acidity and dark fruit, leather, and spice notes, Nocera requires foods with a bit of weight and flavor intensity. To get the most out of these pairings, serve your Nocera slightly cool, between 15°C and 18°C (59°F–64°F)
