It is grown in sparse quantities around the island but mostly in the Pitsilia region. In the 1980s, with the revival of small boutique wineries in Cyprus this variety was rediscovered and its cultivation is slowly on the increase again, as it offers a distinctive character to local wines. Maratheftiko makes for deeply colored wines with soft tannnins and slightly floral aromas. Coffee and chocolate are commonly associated flavors; the wine responds well to oak treatment, which suits the development of these tones. (Courtesy of https://www.wine-searcher.com/grape)
Rediscovered in the 1980s, it’s now one of the most celebrated indigenous grapes in Cyprus, grown across vineyards island-wide. Its name, which comes from the Pitsilia region, refers to the fluffy, cotton-like appearance of its young leaves.
