Manzoni Moscato (Incrocio Manzoni 13.0.25) RARE GRAPE red

History: Grown primarily in the Veneto region in the provinces of Treviso and Belluno and in the hills of Conegliano and Vittorio Veneto, Manzoni Moscato is a dark-skinned grape varietal used primarily to produce sweet, sparkling white or rose wines. The fruit is an experimental work conducted by Luigi Manzoni in the 1920s and 1930s at the Conegliano School of Oenology in conjunction with Azienda Agricola Collalto whose recorded roots date back to the year 958.

Technically known as Incrocio Manzoni 13.0.25, it is a blend of Raboso Piave and Moscato d'Amburgo, an unusual cross that combines the hardiness and resistance of Raboso with the musky aromas of Moscato Nero. This experiment was part of Manzoni's broader cross-breeding program aimed at selecting resilient, productive, and qualitatively sound grape varieties, capable of maintaining their aromatic characteristics under varying soil and climate conditions.

For the record, the numbers in Incrocio Manzoni 13.0.25 identify the specific vineyard plot and hybrid experiment conducted by Italian viticulturist Professor Luigi Manzoni in the 1930s.

The combination reveals exact details about the grapevine's origin:

13: Indicates the 13th row of his experimental vineyard.

0: The central zero signifies that the experiment took place during the second phase of his crossbreeding trials between 1930 and 1935.

25: Specifies the 25th plant (or seedling) in that row.

Manzoni Moscato, a high-yielding vine resistant to winter frost and both types of mildew, but susceptible to botrytis, remains a niche variety, appreciated for its pronounced aromatic expressiveness and its ability to produce fresh, fragrant, and territorial wines. Producing musts rich in sugars, with balanced acidity and intense varietal aromas it represents, today, one of the most particular varieties of the Manzoni heritage, less widespread than the Manzoni Bianco but equally significant from a historical and ampelographic point of view.

The grape variety lends itself to the production of aromatic dry winessparkling wines, semi-sparkling wines, and, in some cases, passito wines, thanks to the robustness of the skins and the concentration of sugars. Distinctive aromas include white flowerspeachapricotsagemusksweet citrus and light spicy notes, with a fragrance reminiscent of Muscat varieties but with a drier, more territorial background.
