Parentage: Malvasia Bianco Lunga & Somarello Nero
The Malvasia Nera di Basilicata vine , like the other black berried Malvasias , belongs to that family of vines whose name “ Malvasia ” derives from a contracted variation of Monembasia , a Byzantine stronghold perched on the rocks of a promontory located south of the Peloponnese , in Greece , where sweet wines were produced which were then exported throughout Europe by the Venetians under the name of Monemvasia. The wine made with this variety had become extremely popular, so much so that Venice it was full of taverns, called Malvase, dedicated to its consumption. In a document of those years the wine “ malvaticus ” is mentioned , it was the black berried Malvasia , produced in Cyprus and also marketed in southern Italy . The Malvasia Nera di Basilicata grape variety is believed to have arrived in Basilicata from nearby Puglia . In fact, it has many characteristics in common with Malvasia Nera di Brindisi .
Malvasia nera di Basilicata is mainly used in the composition of table wines, together with other vines. Its contribution elevates the aromatic component and the alcohol content but above all the level of fixed acidity, which in the southern areas of Italy represents a quality factor.
The wine obtained from the Malvasia nera di Basilicata vine is ruby red in colour. On the palate it is full-bodied
, tannic .
