Guardavalle RARE GRAPE white

History: Guardavalle is believed to have been introduced to Campania by the Greeks in the days of Magna Grecia and cultivated today especially along the Ionian coast in the province of Reggio Calabria. Its name most likely derives from the eponymous village of Guardavalle. It has been officially registered in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties since 1970.

In times past Guardavalle was blended with other varietals in order to obtain the white Cirò wine in Calabria. Over time farmers chose, out of preference, to grow only productive grape vines and, as the Guardavalle was showing positive results, the decision was made not to include in in the blending process.

When Giuseppe Scala, the owner of Santa Venere, started with the project "AUTOCHTHONOUS WINES FROM CALABRIA", he chose to include this varietal. He selected the buds and planted new vines of Guardavalle. To everyone’s surprise the grape has performed very well as a mono-varietal wine. Guardavalle is a vine that does not have particular cultivation requirements and resists well to various diseases.
