The red grape variety originates from Italy. Its distinctiveness was confirmed by a DNA analysis carried out in 2008. The parentage and possible genetic relationships to other Greco varieties are unknown (see Greco Nero).(https://glossary.wein.plus/greco-nero-di-verbicaro)
It is cultivated in old vineyards in the municipalities of Scalea and Verbicaro (CS) where it is also called Mantonico nero Italico and is found mixed with other local varieties. It is vinified in blends with other vines of the area or in purity for wines ready to drink
