History: Grechetto Rosso is a rare red grape variety deeply rooted in the winemaking tradition of central Italy, particularly Umbria. Despite its nominal similarity to Grechetto Bianco, Grechetto Rosso is not a chromatic variant: it is a distinct variety, already documented in ampelographic catalogues between the 19th and 20th centuries as a local grape grown in the Etruscan hills which surround Lake Bolsena, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Rome. Grechetto Rosso was a minor variety, almost always found in isolated rows or in old mixed vineyards, where it contributed color and tannins to blends intended for local consumption. Its rediscovery is very recent and linked to the growing interest in the region's viticultural biodiversity.
Officially registered in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties since 1971, Grechetto Rosso is now grown almost exclusively in Umbria, where it survives in small plots in the areas of Todi, Perugia, Orvieto, and in some hilly areas of Lake Trasimeno. It is also present in very small quantities in upper Lazio but without a major role in winemaking.
The Grechetto Rosso plant is medium-highly vigorous varietal with thick skin and a high anthocyanin content, a characteristic that gives the grape variety a moderate intensity of color. The color of the berries is an intense blue-black with generally balanced acidity. The aromatic
profile is discreet yet refined, dominated by notes of red and black fruits, plum, light spices, and aromatic herbs.

Tasting notes: Grechetto Rosso wines display an intense ruby red color with purple hues in younger samples. On the nose, they offer distinctive, fragrant aromas of cherry, blackberry, plum, pepper, and light balsamic notes.
On the palate, they are structured, fresh, and decidedly tannic, with a lively texture that is savory, harmonious and persistent. The sustained acidity contributes to its drinkability and potential longevity. The finish is dry, fruity and often characterized by a pleasant spicy aftertaste.
Food pairings: It features a bright ruby color, silky tannins, and fresh red fruit notes, pairing best with traditional regional dishes, roasted or grilled meats, savory legume stews, and aged cheeses.
