Giro (Giro Nero, Giro Sardo) RARE GRAPE red

Girò is a red Italian wine grape variety that is grown on Sardinia and used mostly in the production of fortified wines in the Giro di Cagliari Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC). The grape was once widely plan ted throughout Sardinia but its plantings were decimated when the phylloxera epidemic hit the island at the end of the nineteenth century.

The Girò grape has shown itself to thrive in very hot and dry climates, though in these conditions the grapes will lack acidity. The grapes are considered mid to late-ripening and have the potential to accumulate high levels of sugars which lend itself well to the production of sweet wines.

Girò is most commonly associated with the production of fortified wines that can be produced in both a sweet and dry style. Wine expert Jancis Robinson describes some of the sweeter examples of Girò to be lacking in acidity but having firm tannins and a characteristic cherry aroma.

WHICH ONE IS IT?

A prestige vine species, capable of producing elegant and refined dessert wines. Introduced to the Campidano di Cagliari during the period of Spanish domination, it is currently grown in very small areas, mostly situated in the south of the island. DOC status of ‘Girò di Cagliari’ was granted in 1972. Production of this delicious sweet red wine lived through a period of great fame in the past, being recognised and receiving awards in various national and international festivals. It is one of the few Italian Liquoroso wines which can be compared favourably with the well-known Iberian Porto and Madera. It has an intense deep red colour, with brilliant orange hues, and an elegant perfume of cherry jam, caramel and quince. It is consistent and velvet-like to the mouth, well-balanced for sweetness and warm seduction.
