Freisa red

"The wines show great polyphenolic concentration. On one hand, this means that these wines are greatly structured and capable of long aging, but on the other, if they are not given adequate maturation and if great care is not paid to vinification, the risk is to obtain unbalanced wines." - #indigeniusgrapesofitaly.pdf (Cascina Gilli)

Freisa is a red Italian wine grape variety grown in the Piedmont region of north-west Italy, primarily in Monferrato and in the Langhe. Freisa is a vigorous and productive vine whose round, blue-black grapes are harvested in early October.

Freisa seems to be a polarizing variety. It repels many first timers with its sometimes-overbearing tannins and bitter finish, as well as the residual sugar that is often used to counter these effects.

Others find it a refreshing and challenging variety.
