The Franconian Burgundy has genetics that are thousands of years old and which Charlemagne appreciated. In 2009 the red grape variety was rediscovered in a fallow vineyard near Halle that had been abandoned since 1890.
"It is unbelievable that an autochthonously valuable Burgundy red wine variety that Charlemagne already appreciated was almost extinct. With its now rediscovered, varietal, easily recognizable flavor profile , it will enrich the German red wine range. Because it was not until 2009 that it was recognized that the Franconian Burgundy is an independent Burgundy". (https://historische-rebsorten.de/rebsorte/fraenkischer-burgunder/}
