Famoso (Uva Rambela) RARE GRAPE white

History: Famoso, also historically known as Uva Rambela, is a historic white grape variety from Romagna, whose identity has been forged through ancient documents and a surprising recent resurgence. The first records date back to the 17th century, in the agricultural records of Faenza and Ravenna; however, its distribution seems to have always been limited to, for the most part, the Romagna countryside where, historically, Famoso was prized for its intensely fragrant aromas, good productivity and a popular choice for table grapes, especially in local marketsHowever, its strong aromatic profile eventually fell out of favor, as winemakers shifted toward more neutral, commercially versatile varieties.

Though its name translates to "famous," it was almost completely forgotten by the 20th century, until passionate local winemakers rediscovered and rescued a few remaining vines around the year 2000, when genetic analysis and a renewed interest in native grape varieties brought the variety back into focus, highlighting its fragrant aromatic profile and pleasant freshness.

Today, the very trait that once led to its decline, its distinctive nose, is what is driving its renaissance. Winemakers are once again embracing Famoso for its expressive bouquet, and it is quickly gaining popularity among those seeking characterful, aromatic white wines.

The Famoso grape produces wine of a pale straw yellow, sometimes with greenish reflections, intensely floral and fruity, with notes reminiscent of Moscato, including white flowers, tropical fruits, and citrus. In the palate the wines are fresh, vibrant, and aromatic, making it ideal for both still wines and semi-aromatic blends. Source: (https://www.italyabroad.com/grapes/famoso )

Officially registered in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties since 2009, Famoso grapes produce aromatic musts with intense aromas and balanced acidityVinification takes place primarily in steel, often with brief skin macerations to enhance the aromatic components. Low-temperature fermentation preserves the varietal fragrance, while occasional aging on fine lees enhances roundness and complexity.

The aromatic profile is dominated by floral notes (white flowerselderberry), fruity notes (peachpearcitrus) and sometimes a hint of tropical fruit. The grape variety can also be used for semi-sparkling or sparkling wines, thanks to its natural freshness. Source: (https://www.quattrocalici.it )
