Agroscope announced the birth of Divico the grape: a red variety (a cross of Gamaret and Bronner) that is resistant to fungal diseases such as downy mildew, oidium (powdery mildew) and grey rot. The research station claims that this “leads the way towards greener viticulture by allowing a drastic reduction in the use of chemical products.” It produces rather neutral wines.
It provides moderate yields, making crop-thinning techniques such as green harvest unnecessary. The only drawbacks are its early budbreak, flowering and veraison, which mean that birds pose a threat to the crop.
The new variety ripens relatively late, which makes it unsuitable for wine-producing regions which suffer from excessive rain during the fall. When ripe, Divico produces wines with deep color, and abundant tannins, according to Agroscope. The jury is out on whether this is a wine suited to single-varietal bottling or blends, but the research station claims that its “interesting aromatic personality” could be a bonus for both.
