The red grape variety (also Calabrese Montenuovo) comes from Italy. The unknown vine was found in an old vineyard called Montenuovo in the Campi Flegrei area of Campania. It must not be confused with the Nero d'Avola or Sangiovese (both with the synonym Calabrese), despite the fact that they seem to have synonyms or morphological similarities. DNA analyses already identified the Sangiovese parent variety Ciliegiolo in 2004. The biologist Dr. José F. Vouillamoz and Dr. Stella Grando succeeded in identifying Calabrese di Montenuovo as the second parent in 2007. In addition, a parent-offspring relationship was established with the Calabrian variety Magliocco Canino. It is now cultivated in the Campanian province of Naples.
