Bigolona (Smarzirola) RARE GRAPE white

The earliest referral to Bigolona, an Italian wine grape varietal from the Valpolicella region in Veneto, northeast Italy, dates back to the early 19th century. Particularly well suited in the production of late harvest, vin santo and botrytized dessert wines, the grape's synonym Smarzirola stems from the Italian word marcire meaning "to rot".

On the verge of extinction in the early 1970's, viticulturalists at the Istituto Sperimentale per la Viticoltura in Conegliano and Verona began propagating cuttings to preserve the endangered vine. Today it is typically used as a blending component.

(Autoctovino has yet to record a producer that cultivates and bottles the wine as a mono-varietal)
