"Your name has nothing to do with a beggar, but refers to the place Bethlen in Transylvania. It very likely came with German settlers from the Slovenian Styria around 1750, together with the Lemberger, to the Neckar and to the Bergstrasse. In France she was described as "Servanin von der Isère". The name "Servanin" refers to the Shirvan region on the Caspian Sea, where this autochthonous grape variety originated. The Lviv's genetic sister was thought to be missing until 2005." (https://historische-rebsorten.de/rebsorte/bettlertraube/)
