Bellone (Cacchione, Uva Pane) RARE GRAPE white

During the 20th century Bellone risked extinction, but today this white grape variety is slowly gaining traction. Bellone is a rare light-skinned wine grape variety from Lazio, Italy, grown mostly around the Italian capital Rome (where it has been cultivated since the days of the Romans).

Travelling up to Lazio we meet Bellone, a historic white grape variety that is also locally called Cacchione. We find it above all in the provinces of Rome and Latina having survived over the centuries thanks to its ability to adapt to drought conditions in volcanic and sandy soils of the Tyrrhenian coast and characterized by large bunches, consistent skin and late ripening.

It is appreciated for its versatility, performing very well both in the vineyards near the sea and in the hills, with multifaceted aromas, peach is a recurring one, good acidic content, remarkable complexity, a gustatory texture that’s rich and full of flavor and natural salinity.

It is the protagonist in as many 15 denominations and increasingly produced as light, fresh-styled mono varietal white wines, but also used to successfully provide sparkling or sweet, late-harvest options.
