Hectares are decreasing
Avarengo is a low yielding, somewhat aromatic, Italian grape varietal grown Piedmont, Italy and used primarily as a blending component. Avarengo is noted for producing very low harvest yields which, in turn is resulting in more wineries uprooting it. According to Master of Wine Jancis Robinson, as a varietal, Avarengo tends to produce pale-colored, light red wines that are highly aromatic with easy drinking, fresh fruit flavors.
Avarengo comes from the word Avaro, which means stingy; because it doesn't produce a lot of fruit and is quite uneven in its producing capabilities (Avvinare - Oct 1/09)
(Though there are about 1000 hectares (and dropping) of Avarengo remaining, we have yet to find a producer who grows and bottles it unblended)
