Albana Nera RARE GRAPE red

Grown mostly in Emilia Romagna, Italy, east of Bologna since at least the 17th century, this rare varietal though conducive to some inclement growing conditions is not an easy grape from which to produce wine as it requires added pumping or racking in order to ward off the development of unpleasant odors. 

Production has diminished to the point where a large percentage of what little is still grown may be bottled by families and amateurs. The wine is meant to be consumed within 2 years.

Very few producers grow and bottle this varietal (see Producers below).
