Alarijen is a white grape variety grown in Extremadura, in southwest Spain. Conditions in this region are hot and dry, so vines grown here must be able to produce grapes with sufficient acidity in a short, hot growing season. Alarijen is one such variety, making crisp yet mouthfilling white wines.
A DO wine called Ribera del Guadiana is most commonly associated with the Alarijen grape variety. It is planted in small quantities in Catalunya and in Rioja, where it is known as Malvasia Riojana (although it bears no relation to the Malvasia grape family). Its high acidity means it is also suitable for the production of fortified wines.
