Abrusco (Abrostine) RARE GRAPE red

Tuscan varietal with references dating back to the 1400's. Belonging to the teinturier class of grape varieties, with colorless pulp, it offers more than just added color and weight to a wine in a blending role but has been known to produce rather appealing monovarietal wines.

Said to be a difficult varietal to work with, it only requires a short maceration and lengthy maturation to allow it to smoothen sufficiently resulting in less complex wine on the palate than on the nose with pleasant acidity.

Very few producers grow and bottle this varietal (see Producers below)

Italian wine grape variety grown primarily in Tuscany, where it is primarily used as a dark-coloured minor blending component usually with Sangiovese. Abrusco may be used to produce monovarietal wines though results have been mixed.

Very few wineries bottle the varietal unblended (see Producers below)
